She is also the proud recipient of the Susan Smith Blackburn Award, Lark Play Development Center Playwrights of New York (PONY) Fellowship, two Lecompte du Nouy Prizes from Lincoln Center, Fellowship of Southern Writers Bryan Family Award in Drama, NYFA Fellowship, the Columbia University John Jay Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement, National Black Theatre's August Wilson Playwriting Award and the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award.

The Hot Wing King

The Hot Wing King is a 2020 American comedy-drama play by writer Katori Hall. The Hot Wing King premiered off-Broadway at Signature Theatre on February 11, 2020, and had a limited run due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pulitzer winner Katori Hall: ‘I think of theatre as a church. It’s a sanctuary’

One afternoon in mid-June, the playwright Katori Hall glanced at her phone. A text had come in from a former agent. “OMG,” it read. Hall was confused. Then her current agent phoned, telling her she had just won this year’s Pulitzer prize for drama.

“And I was like, ‘Whaaat?!’” Hall recalls. “I started screaming and running around in circles in my house.” Her young son was less impressed. “He was like, ‘Mom, be quiet. I’m looking at YouTube.’”

Predictions for the drama Pulitzer went a little wonky this year. With nearly all theatres shut since March, a play was as likely to appear online as anywhere else and few could guess which works the prizegivers would reward. But the board ultimately chose Hall’s play The Hot Wing King, which the citation described as “a funny, deeply felt consideration of Black masculinity and how it is perceived, filtered through the experiences of a loving gay couple and their extended family as they prepare for a culinary competition”…Hall had written the play as a tribute to her brother; she had never seen a story like his on stage before. “Seeing him navigate the southern world as a gay Black man, I have always wanted to tell some version of his story,” she says.

“With this play, I wanted to embrace the articulation of black life and not necessarily black trauma, so the piece is infused with joy and love and jokes…”

Memphis, Tennesee

Memphis is a city in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is the county seat of Shelby County, in the southwesternmost part of the state, and is situated along the Mississippi River. With a population of 633,104 at the 2020 U.S. census,[7] Memphis is the second-most populous city in Tennessee after Nashville.

Home to Tennessee's largest African-American population, Memphis played a prominent role in the American Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated there in 1968 after activities supporting a strike by the city's maintenance workers. The National Civil Rights Museum was established there and is a Smithsonian affiliate institution.

Memphis Pride

Midtown is a collection of neighborhoods in Memphis, Tennessee, to the east of Downtown. Midtown is home to many cultural attractions, institutions of higher education, and noteworthy pieces of architecture. The district is an anchor in Memphis' arts scene, including the Playhouse on the Square, the Brooks Museum of Art, the Memphis College of Art, and the Levitt Shell. Midtown also plays host to multiple universities and colleges. Midtown is characterized by vintage residential housing, a blend of independent and chain retailers, and high-rise buildings. Multiple historic districts are in Midtown, and commercial corridors such as Overton Square and Cooper Street developed before World War II in an urban style. Mixed use areas with housing, religious, commercial and office spaces are common in Midtown.

Midtown has an evenly distributed black and white population, as well as a notable Asian population. Cleveland Street in Crosstown is the heart of the Vietnamese population in Memphis.

Divorce Law in Missouri

Contested Divorce

A contested divorce can be another way in which the divorce process can unfold. In a contested divorce, the spouses typically cannot come to an agreement on critical issues that must be resolved to obtain the divorce. These issues can include child custody, child support, alimony, division of assets, or debt allocation. These types of divorces usually involve multiple court hearings, and they can be costly and lengthy.

It is important to note that if the spouse is being difficult or is intentionally not willing to come to an agreement in an attempt to thwart the divorce proceedings, it ultimately will not stop the divorce.

FAQs

Q: Do Both Parties Have to Agree to a Divorce in Missouri?

A: Both parties do not have to agree to a divorce under Missouri law. The spouse who is filing for divorce will not be forced to stay in the marriage against their wishes. Missouri is a no-fault divorce state, which means that a spouse doesn’t need the permission or consent of the other to file and obtain a divorce. This also means that either spouse can file for divorce without any specific reason needed. The filing spouse does not have to prove the fault of the other spouse.

Q: What Happens if Your Spouse Doesn’t Respond to Divorce Papers in Missouri?

A: If one spouse is served divorce papers, that spouse is given thirty days to respond. If a written response is not received in thirty days, the petitioning spouse has the legal right to request to schedule a default and inquiry hearing. A copy of the default and inquiry hearing will be sent to the non-responsive spouse, informing them of the hearing. If the spouse continues to be unresponsive, the judge will often issue a default judgment and grant the petitioning spouse the divorce.

Q: Does Adultery Affect Divorce in Missouri?

A: As Missouri is a no-fault state, petitioning spouses do not have to prove that their spouse was unfaithful in the marriage. Divorce can be granted without evidence of adultery. However, if there was adultery in the marriage, it can have financial implications on the divorce agreement. The financial consequences of adultery can impact the alimony awarded, the way in which the assets are divided, child support, attorney’s fees, and other related financial arrangements.

Q: Can You Date While Legally Separated in Missouri?

A: Legally speaking, it is generally acceptable to date while legally separated in Missouri. It should be noted that while legally separated, the marriage is still legally intact. Therefore, if you date while you are legally separated, and then you do end up following through with a divorce, there could be a case of adultery against you, and that could lead to unwanted financial consequences. Once again, Missouri is a no-fault state, so there are very minimal laws against infidelity or adultery in general.
